Some homemade strawberry, raspberry, and cherry jam, some genuine butter, and some fresh crispy bread – a perfect breakfast idea. You can make the soft, braided yeast bread, also known as challah, using only a few ingredients. Choose any extras you like and enjoy their flavour together with your close ones. Some braided bread with jam, butter, or honey will also work well as a sweet afternoon snack. Braided bread is enjoyed by everyone who likes butter-flavoured pastries, and you can additionally decorate it with crumble topping and sesame or poppy seeds. Together with a cup of cocoa they create a perfect pair for cooler rainy days.

Preparation:

Melt the butter and let it cool down. Prepare a large bowl and screen about 800 g flour into it. Add yeast, sugar, and salt, and mix everything thoroughly. Next, add egg, warm water, and the previously molten butter. Knead everything until the dough stops sticking to your hands. Add some flour if necessary.

Put the dough back into the bowl, cover it with a cloth and leave it to rise until it doubles in volume.

Sprinkle the pastry board with flour. Next, knead the dough for a short while and then divide it into equal parts. Their number depends on how many braided bread loaves you want to make. We suggest dividing it into 2 parts in order to obtain two large loaves, into 4 parts in order to obtain 4 medium-sized loaves, or into about 8 parts if you want to bake braided bread rolls for children.

Use one part of the dough to make 3 rolls and braid them. Remember to tuck the ends under. Repeat this until all the braids are formed. Remove trays from the oven and line them with baking paper, sprinkle them with flour, and then place the braids on them. Leave the braided bread so prepared to rise again (for about 20 minutes), covering it with a cloth. In the meantime, heat up the oven. Once the dough is ready, start baking.
